It's no substitute for the wilderness Michelle, but it's certainly a great family adventure and it beats the normal routine of sitting around a television. The focus remains on keeping the kids entertained and having some good family fun. We'd look forward to hearing how it went and what lessons were learned from the experience. Hope you had fun.

I have used all of the shower bags above, and some that arent listed. The smaller bags actually ruptured, being a total waste of money. The 5 gallon versions in the plastic bag have a tendancy to break after 2-3 uses. The best one i have found yet was the Stearns 6.0 6 gallon outdoor shower bag. ive use it in 30-50 degree climate for hunting, as well as 70-90 degree weather for camping. Great results all the time. and its only like60 dollars Its is extremly durable!!!! thick denim, good threading holding it together, this is also the easiest way to hang one up, is take rope and tie it to a chunk of 2x4 wood, and throw that over your branch. Get a Heavy duty camping tent stake to tie one end of the rope to it, your shower bag to the other end of the rope, Then just adjust your height and stake your spike in the ground and your all set. Also for those that want a enclosure Cabellas has a open top one thats under 40 dollars, just put it under your shower bag and your all set!! I hope that helped you all.

Personally I am more of a traditionalist, and enjoy being out in the wilderness. With that being said I think I found something for my family to do this weekend. Hopefully, camping in the backyard will be as fun and enjoyable as you say it is.

Thanks Paula. The terrible tornadoes in Alabama this week brought out all the survivalist questions again, of course. One thing I forgot to mention in the article is that I realized that I desperately need a shower tent. A simple wrap-around enclosure is easy for the guys on a hunt, but the girls prefer a bit more privacy and luxury.

We haven't tested the heat up time of a hanging bag versus a bag laid on the ground but I'm guessing that any difference would be marginal.
It might make a difference if you take the bag to a really hot spot such as Death Valley and laid it down on ground that's already been heated up by the sun. The water would probably heat up faster that way.
Anybody experienced this before?
Does the water heat up faster in a shower bag left hanging or one laid flat on the ground?

Great review! This was very helpful. I'm curious to know if the two bags with the "windows" would have heated up just as much as the all black bag had they been already hanging to heat up.
